"Anniversary," Perishable Records' glorious debut disc
by Sinister Luck Ensemble, features a group put together by Charles Kim - friends from Wilco, Isotope 217, Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, Vandermark 5, among others. "Anniversary" introduced a new soundscape of regal and serene moods...sublime trumpet, pedal steel, vibraphone
and clarinet push and pull against a world-class rhythm section, gently developing instrumental themes of loss and redemption.
Sinister Luck Ensemble's 2003 EP, "The Ghost at the Feast," and CD, "All Our Secrets Are the Same," show the ensemble's transition
into a full-fledged studio and touring band, pushing into new rhythmic and textural directions -- imagine Miles Davis' "In
A Silent Way" woven into Brian Eno's "Another Green World," accompanied by broken snare wires, muted flugelhorn, and frayed
electronics. Charles Kim (Pinetop Seven, Boxhead Ensemble), Tim Mulvenna (Jeb Bishop Trio, Brokeback), Steve Thorngate, Jason Toth (Fruit Bats), augmented by trumpeters Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground Quartet, Isotope 217) and Dave Max Crawford (The Sea and Cake, Poi Dog Pondering) are featured on these recordings.
"Ghost" includes a soundtrack commissioned by animator Laura Heit and the Royal College of Art, and features guest performers
Rob Mazurek and Andrew Bird.
